Returns, receipts and gift card rules
Gift receipts, return windows and your gift card rights.
A little paperwork makes returns easy, and federal rules protect most gift cards.
Returns
- Ask for gift receipts
- Check holiday return windows; many stores extend them, but not all
- Keep receipts together in one envelope or photo folder
Gift card rules
- Under federal law, most store and bank gift cards can't expire within five years of when they were bought or last loaded
- Inactivity fees are limited and only allowed after a year without use
- State laws may give more protection
- Use gift cards soon: if a store closes, the card may become worthless
Never pay a bill with a gift card
Anyone who asks you to pay a bill or fee with gift cards is running a scam.
