Talking to family about cutting back on gifts
Secret Santa, spending limits and "experiences only".
Many people would love to spend less on gifts but don't want to be the one to say it. Often others feel the same. A friendly suggestion early in the year makes it easier.
Ideas to suggest
- A gift exchange (Secret Santa) with a set limit
- Gifts for the kids only
- One shared family experience instead of individual gifts
- A "homemade or second-hand only" year
How to bring it up
"We're trying to spend less this year, and I'd love more time together over more presents. Would anyone be up for a gift exchange instead?" Suggest it early, well before anyone has started shopping.
